Single Stage vs. 2 Stage Furnace

Single-Stage Furnace:

  • Operates in only one stage: it is either on at full capacity or completely off.

  • When the thermostat signals a need for heat, the furnace starts running at its maximum output until the desired temperature is reached.

  • Offers simple operation but may result in temperature fluctuations and can be less energy-efficient, especially during milder weather when full heating capacity is not always necessary.

  • Two-Stage Furnace:

    • Operates in two stages: it has a high and a low setting, providing more flexibility in heating output.

    • In milder conditions, the furnace operates at a lower capacity (first stage), conserving energy and providing more even temperatures.

    • When the temperature drops significantly, the furnace switches to the higher stage to meet increased heating demands.

    • Typically more energy-efficient and can provide improved comfort with less frequent on/off cycling.

Big Changes are coming for 2025 and 2028

Beginning January 1, 2025, the EPA will no longer allow manufactures to build residential ducted and ductless HVAC equipment using the current R-410A refrigerant. R-454B not only meets but exceeds the new requirement with a GWP of 466 and is a 75% reduction in GWP compared to R-410A. We will no longer be installing R-410 Systems after Dec 31st 2024. Components may be availible for 410A systems but costs are likely to increase.

2028 80% gas furnaces will no longer be manufatured. All new furnace installs will be 95% or greater efficiency. This is a big problem for homeowners. Most 80% installations are not easy or in expensive to convert to 95% exhaust.

“We called Matt from ProCare to give us a second estimate on replacing our furnace and A/C unit.

His bid was almost $1100 less than a comparable bid from another company.

We scheduled the replacement and they installed our new system in less than a week. They were on time, cleaned up our furnace room and did a great job. They even explained the features of our new system and programmed our thermostat.. Great guys and 100% will recommend to our friends.”
